Family roots! Family Names
My family root names!
In the Rwandan culture, it is very important to know your family roots because it helps to discover who you are as a person, your family ancestry and the history of the country and Africa as whole.
There is a proverb in Kinyarwanda that says, I quote " Utaganiriye na Se ntamenya icyo Sekuru yasize avuze" which means whoever does not chat with his father will never know what his grandfather said. So, it is important to chat with our elders to know the history of our families, country and continent in general. That will help us to grow as youth and future generation.
There is another saying that states "Utazi iyo ava ntabwo amenya iyo ajya" which means whoever does not know his source/origin will never know his destination.
When a Rwandan elder asks you "Urinde?" Who are you? You have to name yourself and your ancestors to the 7th generation.
N.B: Note that the genealogical line are reckoned through the father.
However, it is good to know your mother's line too, how their family grew. The circumstances in which your parents met and how both families became one.
My line is :
Ndi Ngabonziza,
wa Twagiramungu,
wa Murekezi,
wa Kayonga,
wa Rwamunyana,
wa Nkingiye,
wa Nkundabombi,
wa Munyankiko,
wa Rugwagwa.
I appreciate Ngabonziza 🇷🇼😍👌
